Lightning strike at New Jersey seaside kills lifeguard, injures 7, police say

A lifeguard was killed and 7 others had been injured after lightning struck a seaside in New Jersey Monday afternoon, authorities stated. 

Police had been referred to as to the 21st Avenue Seashore within the South Seaside Park part of Berkeley Township round 4:35 p.m. for a report of a lightning strike. Once they arrived on the scene, police decided that eight individuals, together with 4 lifeguards, had been struck by lightning or injured from a residual strike, in line with the Berkeley Township Police Division.

Berkeley Township Mayor Carmen Amato referred to as the incident a “tragic and heartbreaking day for our city and the complete Jersey Shore.”

Berkeley Township ocean seashores can be closed for swimming Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, as seaside workers and lifeguards can be off, police stated.

South Seaside Park is about 60 miles south of New York Metropolis.
