Free Wi-Fi Project To Continue After Winding Down Of Google ‘Station’

New Delhi: RailTel will proceed to supply free WiFi at over 5,600 railway stations throughout the nation, the PSU stated Monday amid an announcement by Google that it has determined to wind down its ‘Station’ programme globally by way of 2020, together with in India.

Google had launched ‘Station’ in India in 2015 in partnership with Indian Railways and RailTel to convey quick and free public WiFi to over 400 railway stations within the nation by mid-2020.

RailTel began offering free WiFi at railway stations and Google was its expertise associate for 415 stations of A1, A and C class solely.

“In this partnership Google provided the RAN and technology support and RailTel provided the physical infrastructure and internet bandwidth (ISP). But going forward, apart from these 415 stations, we have also provided free wi-fi in 5190+ B, C, D stations as well,” RailTel stated in a press release.

“We have roped in a number of partners along the journey and currently RailTel is providing free WiFi at 5600+ stations across the country. We entered into a five-year contract with Google for supporting us with setting up WiFi at 415 stations only and the contract is going to expire soon,” it stated.

RailTel will proceed to supply free WiFi at over 5,600 railway stations throughout the nation together with the 415 stations which have been commissioned with the technological assist from Google, the assertion stated, including that RailTel will even proceed to execute WiFi connectivity on the stability stations.

The US-based firm stated it’s working with its companions to transition current websites in order that they’ll stay helpful assets for the group.
